Minutes: September 25th, 2007
 

The regular meeting of the Catawba Island Township Trustees was called to order by chairman Gary Mortus at 7:30 p.m. in the conference room and began with the Pledge of Allegiance.  Present were Gary Mortus, Robert Schroeder, William Rofkar,   Donald Bertke, Asphalt Systems, Jack DeVore, Joel and Vicki representing Aflac, Kelly Frey, Luke Dostal, James Stouffer, Ted Johnson and Pat Cerny. 

William Rofkar made a motion to accept the minutes of the previous meeting seconded by Robert Schroeder.  William Rofkar, aye; Robert Schroeder, aye; Gary Mortus, aye.  Robert Schroeder made a motion to accept and pay the bills in the amount of $103,606.25 seconded by William Rofkar.  Robert Schroeder, aye; William Rofkar, aye; Gary Mortus, aye. 

Communications included a letter from the Ottawa County Board of Elections in regard to November 6th election day and the use of the Community Hall; Robert J. Hille, Treasurer, Ottawa County in regard to home foreclosures and a program called “Save our Homes”; Ohio Division of Liquor Control, Catawba Cleveland Development Group asking if we request a hearing on a license.

Donald Bertke gave a presentation  in regard to Asphalt Systems.  Salem Township has used their product.  Vicki and Joel gave a presentation on Aflac benefits. 

Kelly Frey and Luke Dostal gave an overview of the Sand Road Water Main Replacement Project and a list of contacts.  Speer Bros. have received the contract for this project.  Gary Mortus asked the time line of the road repairs when it is completed and it sinks.  The township does not want the cost of repairs.  Kelly Frey stated the County is responsible and the contractor will take care of the road repairs.  There will be temporary repairs due to the time of the year.  The process would be to contact the Sanitary Engineering Department and they would contact the contractor.  If that does not work, call the Sheriff’s Department in an emergency or the Speer Bros. listed on the contact list.  Gary Mortus asked what if the road settles in six months.  The County has a one year warranty from the time of completion with the contractor.  After that the County will be responsible.  Gary Mortus stated the residents of Catawba will not bear any costs for this project as in the past.  Luke Dostal stated the other project is the Water Main Corrosion Mitigation Project Phase II.  This will be on Rte. 53 and part of Cemetery Road to the water tower.  Luke Dostal also described the water usage questionnaire at service address that is being sent to all residents on the public water system in regard to “backflow”. Preventing “backflow” is a state wide mandate for all public water systems.

Gary Mortus thanked Kelly Frey for the reduction in the tap in fees for the Heigel Park restroom. 

Ted Johnson, a hunter education instructor,  requested the use of the conference room for

hunter education classes for the Division of Wildlife for a weekend.  The Community Hall is booked for the dates they need.  The Trustees will let them use the conference room. 

James Stouffer asked what the school  district is going to do with the Catawba School.

Mr. Stouffer stated he would like to bid on or participate with another entity in bidding on the facility.  He will compose a letter to the township and to the school board  with a proposal with their interests.  Mr. Stouffer stated the school board has a fund in place to take the school building down.  He also suggested that Catawba Township have a historical board.  Gary Mortus stated the school board has changed their opinion on the disposal of the school.  They can sell it to a government entity and can split the property.

Robert Schroeder asked James Stouffer about the area between the cemetery and the golf course.  James Stouffer stated he would like to put an attractive fence and post in the area.  Stone columns and rough cedar. 

Robert Schroeder stated the Christmas on Catawba group would like to use the Chapel for their Christmas gala.  Gary Mortus suggested the group should contact the Church of God to work something out. 

Gary Mortus stated there is a meeting scheduled for Friday,  September 28th  for the Rock Ledge inspection with the Corps of Engineers at 8:00 a.m.
