Catawba Island Township Board of Township Trustees

Meeting Minutes

April 8, 2014

The regular business meeting of the Catawba Island Board of Township Trustees was called to order by Chairman Matt Montowski on Tuesday, April 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the conference room.

In attendance were Gary Mortus, Matt Montowski, Karen Shaw, John Gangway,
Dan Barlow, James Hanney, Randy Riedmaier, and Jack DeVore.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all.

Gary Mortus made a motion to approve the March 25 Board of Township Trustees regular meeting minutes as presented. Matt Montowski seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried.

Gary Mortus made a motion to approve and pay the bills, including the last payroll, in the amount of $49,360.53. Matt Montowski seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried.

Correspondence

A thank you note from Lorrain Croy for the opportunity to introduce herself at the March 11 meeting.

A letter from Terri Molter regarding their downed mailbox in the winter and requesting reimbursement for replacement.

Dan Barlow said he spoke with the home owner and explained the mailbox was not damaged by the township but he believed was damaged by someone backing out of a nearby driveway according to snow tracks observed by plow drivers. He said the home owner expressed her understanding of the situation.

A letter from Elma Sisi requesting Township Trustees reconsider their decision to not reimburse the cost of replacing mailboxes on Porter Road as discussed at the March 11 regular meeting.

A letter from Ohio Insurance Services Agency regarding employee benefits and health insurance. In the correspondence, Frank Harmon requested the enclosed letter of intent to participate in the Ohio Public Entity Consortium Healthcare Cooperative (OPEC-HC) be completed and returned by May 1, 2014.

Gary Mortus made a motion to enter into a letter of intent with Ohio Insurance Agency for the OPEC-HC program as explained in the letter of correspondence dated March 27, 2014 from Frank Harmon. Matt Montowski seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried.

Notification from the Ottawa County Sanitary Engineering Department that the backflow preventers installed at various township locations in 2013 require annual inspections. Reports completed by a certified tester are due by June 30, 2014.

The 2013 Annual Report from Joyful Connections and a letter requesting a charitable gift to assist with operational costs.

An invitation to speaking engagements on April 7 and April 14 at Magruder Hospital from David Prudhomme, founder of Mederi Wellness LLC.

Fiscal

Fiscal Officer Karen Shaw presented the March 2014 financial reports and bank reconciliation. There were no questions or concerns.

Fire and Safety

Fire Chief John Gangway said the radio switch over to digital for the police and fire departments was completed April 3 and is working well.

John Gangway said the benefit breakfast April 5 was a success. He said they served more than 240 people and over $4,000 was raised for Honor Flight of Northwest Ohio.

John Gangway presented a quote for four pagers totaling $1,699.20 from Bender Communications. He said the new pagers are needed for the fire department.

Trustees agreed to the purchase of four new pagers for the fire department.

Maintenance

Maintenance Supervisor Dan Barlow said he is having Kreimes look at the tennis courts at Heigle Park. He said both courts are cracked all the way across and are in need of repair.

Dan Barlow said the restrooms at Heigle Park are now open and operational. He said the docks are open at the Marina and the restrooms at the Marina will be open in a couple weeks.

Zoning

Matt Montowski said there were five permits and five variances issued in the month of March with a total of $1,525.04 collected in fees.

New Business

Deputy James Hanney of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office gave a presentation regarding the Sheriff’s Marine Patrol including a brief history of the program. Deputy Hanney also requested funds in support of the Sheriff’s Marine Patrol.

Gary Mortus made a motion to contribute $6,000 in support of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Marine Patrol. Matt Montowski seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried.

Gary Mortus made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Matt Montowski seconded the motion.
All voted aye. The meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
