Meeting Minutes

November 28, 2017

The regular business meeting of the Catawba Island Board of Township Trustees was called to order by Chairman Matt Montowski on Tuesday, November 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the conference room.

In attendance were Gary Mortus, Matt Montowski, William Rofkar, Karen Shaw,
Dan Barlow, John Gangway, Kevin Wylie, Ernest Wylie, Julie Wylie, Rick Smetzer,
Diane Belden, David Belden, and Randy Riedmaier

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all.

William Rofkar made a motion to approve the November 14, 2017 Board of Trustees regular meeting minutes as presented. Gary Mortus seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried.

Gary Mortus made a motion to approve and pay the bills, including the last payroll, in the amount of $296,055.91 including a payment to the Ottawa County Engineer’s Office of $190,000 in support of the West Catawba Road Resurfacing and Safety Improvement Project. William Rofkar seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried.

Correspondence

A letter from Eric Schramm expressing his interest in joining the Ottawa County Board of Health, highlighting his experience and qualifications, and requesting the Trustees consideration.

A letter from Ron Lajti of the Ottawa County Engineer’s Office expressing his appreciation for support and cooperation by township personnel during the West Catawba Road Resurfacing and Safety Improvement Project. He also thanked township Trustees for the $190,000 financial commitment to the project which included widening the safety shoulders.

Notification from the Ohio Public Utilities Protection Service that our 2018 annual assessment will be $256.80. The assessment amount reflects transmissions based on our database selection during the 12-month measurement period of September 1, 2016 through August 31, 2017.

Maintenance

Maintenance Supervisor Dan Barlow presented an estimate from Judco, Inc. for $744.00 to have green LED warning lights installed on the two International trucks. He said the same warning lights were installed on the two one ton trucks and visibility of the trucks has improved.

Trustees agreed the LED warning lights should be installed for safety and visibility.

Dan Barlow said they will be purchasing some sign posts from the County Engineer’s Office.

Trustees acknowledged the nice work by maintenance personnel trimming the bushes around the administration building and installing Christmas lights.



Fire and Safety

Fire Chief Kevin Wylie said the repairs for Engine 222 by W.W. Williams came in slightly higher than anticipated and there will be an additional testing and repair charge.

William Rofkar made a motion to approve an additional $500 in repairs for Engine 222 from W.W. Williams. Gary Mortus seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried.

Kevin Wylie discussed concern about the Harbor Island Bridge and the new load limits posted. Kevin Wylie suggested he and the Trustees meet with the Ottawa County Prosecutor and possibly the State Fire Marshal regarding the situation.

William Rofkar said he will contact the insurance company.


New Business

Diane Belden said Wreaths Across America will be held at the Catawba Island Cemetery Saturday, December 16, at 11 a.m. She said an Honor Guard will be present, Bert Fall is the guest speaker, and a fly over is planned for the day of remembrance.

William Rofkar said the furnace is being installed at the chapel and should be operational soon.

Gary Mortus said they are getting a price to clear approximately 2.3 acres of property south of Heigel Park for a possible dog park.

Gary Mortus made a motion to approve an additional $400 to Mullens Tree Service for grinding an additional 10 tree stumps at $40 each along the north walking trail. William Rofkar seconded the motion. Vote on the motion: Gary Mortus, aye; William Rofkar, aye; Matt Montowski, abstained. Motion carried.

William Rofkar made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Gary Mortus seconded the motion. All voted aye. The meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m.
