Catawba Island Township Board of Township Trustees

Special Meeting

November 2, 2018

Catawba Island Township Trustees held a special meeting on Friday, November 22, for the purpose of discussing the current salt supply. Chairman Gary Mortus called the special meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. in the conference room of the administration building.

In attendance were Gary Mortus, Matt Montowski, William Rofkar, Karen Shaw, and Dan Barlow

Gary Mortus said he is not optimistic about the winter forecast and he does not feel that the township has an adequate supply of salt stored for the winter. Gary Mortus said the Ottawa County Engineer’s Office is extending the life of their salt supply by mixing it with number 9 limestone and has offered to mix our current salt supply with number 9 limestone.

The Trustees all agreed that they do not want the salt being spread on township roads to have the number 9 limestone mixed in due to the potential mess it could create in residential areas.

Dan Barlow presented a quote from Holcomb Materials for salt delivered for $119 per ton.

Gary Mortus made a motion to purchase 200 tons of salt from Holcomb Materials in Port Clinton at $119 per ton delivered for a total of $23,800. Matt Montowski seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried.

Gary Mortus said Ottawa County Engineer Ron Lajti has agreed to reimburse the township 50% of the cost of the salt in exchange for township maintenance personnel maintaining (remove snow and treat with anti-icing agents) NW Catawba Road, the county owned road within the township.

Gary Mortus made a motion to reallocate $25,000 in the Gasoline Tax Fund from 2021-330-360 Contracted Services to 2021-330-420 Operating Supplies for the purpose of purchasing salt and supplies for winter road maintenance. William Rofkar seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried.

Dan Barlow said he would like to have Mullens Tree Service trim a couple trees in the cemetery for a total cost of approximately $600.

Trustees agreed to the cost of $600 for the trimming of two trees in the cemetery as needed.

Matt Montowski made a motion to adjourn the meeting. William Rofkar seconded the motion. The meeting was adjourned at 9:18 a.m.
